Subject: [B*E*S*T] Re: Web site Date: 1997-12-19 15:24 I have vast amounts of data, but no time to sort it into a coherent whole. Of course, entering the data and organizing it could be another learning opportunity for the kids! I learned so much at the Florida EVIC convention that I am suffering from information overload. I am trying to write a report, but here are some highlights: About 2000 people attended, 100-200 of them kids. It rained the entire time, and the events were outdoors, but it didn't make any difference. They were WIRED! Elementary schools used identical model kit cars (6" long). Middle schools used identical kit solar cars (12" long). High schools built full sized cars (ordinary cars converted to electric). The EVIC format is highly structured, with detailed rules. Several schools just went at it alone, like we are doing. Teacher comments: - dramatic proof of thematic (theme-based) education "SAT scores went from 200 below average to 100 above" - winds up a school program, not class program "involved every class but cosmetology" - "attendance, attitude, and cooperation improved dramatically" - need national structure, links, internet, vocational approval - professional development (what's in it for teachers) - need interaction between elementary, middle, high school programs "we never knew the others existed until meeting at conference" - rules, large disparity between vehicles handicaps small, poor schools "the current point system is backwards; rewards wealth and groups that use last year's car. Luckily, the students largely ignore it." - "too much emphasis on getting things done, instead of WHY things work" - Virtually all the students said they would go to an EV summer camp if one were available.
